Behind the Badge: Melanie’s Story

Melanie M. | January 15, 2025

Melanie (she/her) is a Senior Transition Specialist Representative in our Client Setup and Service department. Melanie works with new Paycom clients to smoothly implement our software and make sure they’re ready to process their first payroll.

We met with Melanie to talk about her move from teaching and how she’s used her experience to find success and fulfillment at Paycom.

Taking the leap from teaching

I used to be a second-grade teacher. I taught for a few years, but one of my very close friends, Angela, kept telling me about her job at Paycom. I wanted to try something new and expand my horizons, so I took the leap and joined in 2023.

In this position, I do a lot of specific product trainings for clients. It’s similar to teaching in that I still build out “lesson plans” and have a checklist of items I like to point out. I always try to keep the sessions interesting and make a lot of eye contact. I also work with a lot of internal teams in this role — whether they’re client-facing or not. It’s one of the biggest benefits of the job because I get to talk to new people every single day.

A career and lifestyle change

I was looking for something where I could still do what I love while also being able to change my lifestyle. This position was the perfect way to get into the corporate world. I’ve learned so many new things, including how a company runs. But my day to day is totally different now.

Typically, a sales representative closes a deal and then sends the new client to our team. My job is to help them throughout the entire transition process. We set up a timeline, talk through all of their upcoming meetings and learn more about their goals and expectations so we can set up our software to reach them.

I’m based in Miami, so I partner with clients across South Florida. And because I’m bilingual, I’m also able to assist with our Spanish-speaking clients. Once a client successfully processes their first payroll, I hand them off to their Paycom Specialist for long-term care.

Opportunities for growth

I love to learn, so I’m always on the lookout for any kind of career development. I started as a Transition Specialist Representative before being promoted to senior. Now, I’m working toward becoming an executive transition specialist representative within the next year.

My manager and team have been extremely helpful. I ask a lot of questions, and during one-on-ones, my manager always tells me about training programs I can take or points out things I should add to my portfolio or do to stand out. I completed one of Paycom’s leadership training programs this year and have plenty of opportunities to learn and grow.

A culture that cares

My team decorated my desk when I got promoted, and we do a lot of different office events and team outings. It’s nice to have that support system when I come into the office.

The lifestyle change has been beneficial for me and my family. The $1-per-pay-period health insurance is top tier, and the 401(k) match is really nice. But this role is really about communicating with people on a day-to-day basis. The training is the fun piece of it. I get to show clients all of our different tools and help them use our software to solve their problems. I still get to do what I love.
