As a manager of sales, Rudy (he/him) runs our New England territory. Read how he’s grown his career and led his high-performing team to success through a culture of accountability and optimism.
A culture of accountability
I was recruited to work at Paycom, but I immediately knew I was in the right place. Not only is the company incredibly financially stable, but every single person I met in leadership really seemed to drive a culture of accountability.
My first role was an outside sales representative in Philadelphia. I quickly worked my way up to executive sales representative, and now — just five years later — I manage our New England territory.
I tell everyone that at Paycom, you truly get to control your own destiny. The harder you work, the more you sell. And, in turn, the more opportunity you have to earn.
Keep your eye on the prize
I’m a very high-energy person who’s intrinsically motivated, which tends to lend itself well to sales roles. When you’re working in outside sales, there will always be challenges. Of course we want the wins to outweigh the losses, and one of the primary ways we counter that at Paycom is by setting goals and helping you achieve them.
Whether that’s a short-term goal at work or a long-term vision for your life, it’s important to have a reason to get up every day. Optimism is a core value of our office and something we all deeply believe will lead us to success.
I recently accomplished a personal goal I’d been working toward, which was to buy a vacation home. That was something I never expected to achieve in my life, so the fact that I did it in my mid-30s is still sometimes a bit of a shock.
Watching sales reps win
I spent 11 years in the Marine Corps, seven and a half of which were active duty. Quite a few of those skills transferred well to sales. I’d say the number one thing is leading by example. I recognize that people tend to run at the speed of their leader, so the quicker and more energetic I can move, the more results I’ll see from my people. There is also a tremendous amount of accountability in the military, so I’m always asking myself, “How do I hold myself accountable?” and then, “How can I motivate others to hold themselves accountable?”
My favorite part about my job by far is watching sales reps win. One of my team members was recently promoted to executive sales representative in one year and five days, and a second representative on my team will be promoted in about a month. I can’t wait to watch them become leaders in other offices.
