Alonzo Brooks | September 11, 2024

Linh H. (she/her), a team leader of Data Engineering at Paycom, was in search of a company with a stable, positive culture and the chance to work with cutting-edge technologies. Her search wasn’t long before she found Paycom.

Linh holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), and after graduation, she was ready to bring her skills to help build Paycom’s software. She shared that, while she came in prepared, she quickly realized that Paycom’s supportive culture and professional development opportunities would be instrumental in her career growth.

Because of her commitment to learning and growth, Linh saw success quickly and was promoted to team leader. She now enjoys leading a team and developing innovative projects in a collaborative environment where she’s able to make a tangible impact for Paycom’s clients.

As a team leader, Linh is always looking to improve the software and her team. She focuses on connecting her team to development opportunities while keeping up with the latest technologies that will help advance their work.

We caught up with Linh to understand more about her role in Data Engineering.

What does a day in the life of an IT Data Engineer look like at Paycom?

At Paycom, I build and maintain data pipelines and data platforms, ensuring quality data for our clients.

A typical day starts with a team stand-up meeting to review progress and address any roadblocks, and the rest of the day, I typically work on coding, maintaining our big data platforms, troubleshooting issues, optimizing data workflows and staying current with the latest data engineering technologies.

What classes or experience prepared you for this role?

To be successful in data engineering, you must have a willingness to learn. The courses I took in databases, data structures and algorithms were essential to my success.

There were certain skills that may have helped before entering the workplace, but luckily, Paycom provides many opportunities to learn and fill in any gaps. It’s helpful that they prioritize career development for all employees!

How does Paycom help you achieve your goals?

Paycom offers professional development opportunities and access to the latest tools and cutting-edge tech. Personally, I’ve been able to enhance my skills in data engineering and take on challenging projects. This has been instrumental to my growth.

Even now, as a team lead, I’ve been able to grow both professionally and personally through the many career development opportunities at Paycom.

What’s one of your favorite Paycom memories?

I’ve always enjoyed participating in Paycom’s Codeathon. Every year, developers have the chance to participate in a coding marathon to help us build the best technology for our clients while having fun.

It’s been exciting to see my work used in many different projects from this event!

What advice do you have for someone going into this role?

My advice is to learn and adapt to new technologies as data engineering evolves. Focusing on a strong foundation is essential!

Linh’s Paycom journey is a perfect example of how strong foundations paired with Paycom’s growth opportunities accelerate careers. Empowering our people to develop both technical and leadership skills is a key part of Paycom’s commitment to win.
