We caught up with Liz to talk more about her role as a Deployment Engineer.
What does a day in the life of a software deployment engineer look like?
The Deployment Engineer II role focuses on code quality, automating and maintaining software delivery, and resolving system issues in collaboration with the Development Operations, IT and Software Quality Assurance teams.
The first few tasks of the day focus on housekeeping for our applications and services. This consists of monitoring for bugs and logging into sites we manage to ensure they’re reachable. I tend to have a few projects going, which I’ll focus on next. We also work on requests such as uploading files to servers; investigating Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) testing run failures; and ensuring the Continuous Integration (CI)/Continuous Delivery (CD) pipeline runs smoothly for our applications. This includes solving build and deployment bugs, troubleshooting merge issues and validating code deployment. I collaborate with my team and enjoy this time with my co-workers.
What classes or experience prepared you for this role?
Management information systems is a very well-rounded degree and gave me the opportunity to explore technical classes as well as business-focused classes. Business communications developed my written and verbal communication skills, and database administration gave me an excellent Structured Query Language (SQL) foundation and a baseline database knowledge that helps me in my work. In addition, Excel basics sharpened the Excel skills I already had, plus it taught me new techniques to develop my own reports and easily navigate Excel.
What advice do you have for someone going into this role?
Never be afraid to ask questions! We’re all new at one point, so it’s important to soak up everything and familiarize yourself with our services, tools and different roles/teams within our department and business.
Liz brings her expertise, attention to detail and high standard of quality to work every day, ensuring we serve our clients with world-class software. You, too, can make an impact, do meaningful work and simplify the lives of employees and businesses.
