Building the Future: Talking Tech With a Quality Assurance Analyst

Lyndsey Hyde | September 6, 2024

Senior Quality Assurance Analyst Kim A. (she/her) joined Paycom more than five years ago after being encouraged by a friend. Learning about the company values and opportunity for growth ultimately drew her to Paycom.

Today, Kim is a Senior Quality Assurance Analyst and truly enjoys her job helping to simplify life for employees while working with the rest of the growing technology department.

She describes working in the department as “constantly being surrounded by smart, capable and caring people” and said she appreciates opportunities for continuous learning and encouragement from her leadership team to grow and make a career at Paycom.

“Some of my favorite memories have been through Paycom,” she shared. “Team lunches, Payroll Week, Codeathon celebrations, experiencing the eclipse.”

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Kim went to the University of Oklahoma. We caught up with her to learn more about her role in quality assurance.

What does a day in the life of a QA analyst look like?

Working as a QA analyst might involve writing test cases, testing software, automating tests, reporting or following up on reports, attending meetings or collaborating with colleagues on software developments.

What classes or experience prepared you for this role?

Several courses helped me to develop skills to grow my professional career; however, no specific experience prepared me for the work I do today. I have learned a lot through my peers and from the training and resources provided by Paycom.

What is something that you learned or wish you would have learned before getting to Paycom that would’ve better prepared you?

Prior to Paycom, I worked several client-facing jobs and at a neurosurgery clinic. Something I learned in those roles was how to handle unexpected challenges. Those experiences have allowed me to handle difficult situations with ease and calm.

How does Paycom help you achieve your goals?

Paycom facilitates several learnings, including courses on leadership, courses related to the QA role and, more recently, training and opportunities to earn International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) certifications. Learning truly never stops at Paycom, and that’s one of my favorite parts of working here: always learning!

What is your favorite #PaycomPerk?

The daily catered lunches are a big perk for me. It is so convenient and frees up my time to do things I enjoy when away from work. We have generous paid time off, a $1 per-pay-period employee health plan, a gym on campus and too many other great benefits to list.

What advice do you have for someone going into this role?

Either my first or second week as a new hire, I wondered if I was cut out for the job. So my advice is to be patient with yourself and with your peers, be willing to learn. Being kind goes a long way. Be considerate of your peers and stay driven. And take breaks as needed. If you’re doing the work, it will show.
