Building the Future: Talking Tech With a Software Analyst

Lyndsey Hyde | August 30, 2024

Cody G. (he/him), originally from Oklahoma, is a Software Analyst in our Information Technology department. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems (MIS).

Cody was nearing his graduation date when he first learned about Paycom. Initially attracted by the people and the opportunity for growth, he was hooked once he applied. “My recruiting and onboarding process could not have gone more smoothly,” he said. “The interviews were very comfortable and not intended to be intimidating, and there was an air of friendliness and respect that went a long way.”

The deciding factor behind his decision? “This is the largest tech company in Oklahoma!” Cody said. “If you are looking for a career in tech, you’d be hard-pressed to pass up an opportunity here!”

Now with two years under his belt, Cody is confident he made the right choice. Of course he enjoys the Paycom perks, like $1-per-pay-period health insurance. But the abundance of career and professional development is why he loves working here.

We caught up with Cody to learn more about his role as a Software Analyst.

What does a day in the life of a Software Analyst look like at Paycom?

It’s very engaging! It can range from researching emerging data issues to training and learning new programs — not to mention all the ongoing projects! We’re constantly reskilling and upskilling.

My main role at Paycom is to ensure that the data stored within our database is running smoothly so our clients can run their payroll on time every time.

What classes or experience prepared you for this role?

My database class and MIS capstone helped me gain a lot of real-world experience. But if you’re interested in working with databases, an introduction to MIS class is a great place to start. It also helps to familiarize yourself with Structured Query Language (SQL), which is the primary coding language for storing and managing data.

What is something you learned or wish you would have learned before getting to Paycom that would’ve better prepared you?

I wish I knew I’d be able to learn on the job! At first, I was nervous I wouldn’t have the skills to be a successful Software Analyst at Paycom. But I could not have been more wrong! My team has built me up to be much more confident in my skills. All the teams at Paycom are really supportive, and we all have a lot of laughs and fun together. Looking back, it was one big unnecessary headache to be so worried!

Paycom provides all the support you need to reach your goals. There are so many learning opportunities to improve within your role and as a professional. I recently received the first promotion of my career, so that was definitely a reason to celebrate!

What advice do you have for someone going into this role?

There’s no need to be nervous! Paycom’s environment is very friendly, from the top down. If you come in with an open mind and willingness to learn, you’ll crush it in this role — or any role at Paycom for that matter!

Cody has found a career in tech that engages and challenges him. He continues to build his skills in a positive, collaborative environment. You, too, can find a welcoming workplace that prioritizes your development and helps you reach your goals!
