Jyson B. (he/him), originally from Oklahoma, is an IT Security Incident Response Analyst in our Information Technology department in his third year at Paycom. He graduated from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in IT — cybersecurity, digital forensics and network infrastructure.
As Jyson learned about Paycom during the application process, he decided it was where he wanted to be. Aside from the $1-per-pay-period health insurance, free soda machines and on-campus fitness center, he knew there was more to Paycom.
He’s found the work to be both exciting and rewarding. “Learning new things every day makes working in IT so fun,” he said.
Not only has Paycom allowed him to accomplish his personal goal of purchasing his first home, he’s also been able to develop his skills in IT software and become more knowledgeable in his field.
We sat down with Jyson to learn more about a role in IT Security.
What does a day in the life of an IT security analyst look like at Paycom?
The day varies depending on the task. I participate in investigations for abnormal activity. This can include a variety of things, like assisting with client investigations when it pertains to information requests or suspicious activity. I’ll review our current logs and tools, make new alerts and detections that help prevent attacks, and enhance the processes and documentation we have in place for our Security Operations Center (SOC).
Overall, this role is about practicing investigations to ensure our software, clients and employees are safe from abnormal activity or even malware.
What classes or experience prepared you for this role?
I was on the SOC team here at Paycom before transitioning to IT Security. That experience really helped prepare me, but all the IT departments at Paycom are great at developing people professionally and personally.
What is something you learned or wish you would have learned before getting to Paycom that would’ve better prepared you?
I was only familiar with a few coding languages. I would encourage anyone who’s interested in these roles to familiarize yourself with Python, Java and PHP. That would help you become a well-rounded candidate for any IT team.
What advice do you have for someone going into this role?
Keep striving to learn and remain confident in yourself! You’re not going to know everything all at once! As long as you take things day by day, then everything will be okay!
Jyson has found a career in tech that’s fulfilling and fun. He continues to build his skills, set new goals and grow his career in a collaborative workplace. You, too, can find a place that prioritizes your development and drives meaningful work.
