While Kenna was born in Garland, Texas, she calls Yukon, Oklahoma, her home. As a kid, her family traveled to nearly every state. This fueled her passion for hiking, art museums and, of course, exceptional food. Her parents always supported her creative endeavors, which led her to attend the University of Central Oklahoma for graphic design.
After graduating with numerous awards, Kenna joined a communications firm. Her six-year tenure took her from intern to a director-level position. (She even won eight American Advertising Awards.)
In 2019, Kenna sought to move out of startups and into a more established and focused product design role. She found that and more at Paycom.
We spoke with Kenna about her Paycom Journey. Here’s what she had to say.
Tell us about your Paycom Journey.
I heard great things about Paycom’s culture in product design and knew it was the next step my career needed. I joined the team as an associate product designer, where I learned about payroll and HR software for the first time. I quickly moved up to the mid-level product designer role and then to the Mobile team.
There, I learned about a wide range of Paycom products, built my leadership skills and eventually led an amazing team of fellow product designers working on:
- Manager on-the-Go®
- Beti®
- and more
As I settled into the role, I learned that my true passion was helping others build their career, find joy in their job and build processes to strengthen Paycom as a whole.
What do you do, and what does a normal day look like?
As a product design manager, I develop leaders, implement processes and bridge the gap between our department partners and product designers. I also review designs, enhance products and help shape our team’s goals with my fellow manager and senior manager.
A new day always brings something different, but it often starts with setting priorities. Some weeks can involve communicating process change rollouts, too. I meet regularly with stakeholders to update them on projects and ensure alignment with our department goals. I also gather feedback from, answer questions for and mentor product designers.
Why did you decide to join the Paycom team?
I was looking for a job where I could balance my work and life, so I could be a multimedia artist at home again. That’s where I crochet sweaters, sew clothing and make jewelry. I’m proud to say — through Paycom — I found that.
I also discovered a stable company with an undeniably caring culture. We are always eager to help each other succeed, commit to the solutions we create and form strong bonds along the way.
What is the best part about your role?
I love collaborating, communicating and solving problems with my team. This creates strong partnerships and makes working together a joy in our busy lives. For me, it’s important to serve those around me, listen to their needs and ideas, and help them succeed in their careers.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
The interfaith room. The view of the courtyard is soothing, and the natural light is great. It is especially pretty in the spring with everything blooming on a rainy day or during the winter when there’s snow on the ground.
