Starting Strong: What to Do in the First 90 Days of a New Job

Emma White | March 18, 2025

Every day, somebody is starting a new job somewhere.

Today is probably Day 1 for quite a few people, given that the average employee changes jobs every 4.6 years. We’d like to share some advice with new employees navigating new work environments. Here are some tips to smooth out the adjustment process and speed up the transformation from new hire to valued contributor.

Achieving goals starts with setting goals

It’s a given that you want to succeed in your new position, but how will you achieve that success? The first step is setting the goal! Start by clearly defining how you want to expand your experiences and skills as you grow within the company.

According to a recent study of professionals across a variety of industries, there’s been a significant increase in mentoring and coaching over the last few years. This is good news for new employees and veterans alike, because it means there’s a chance to grow in your career or to help someone else grow in theirs.

Start asking questions so you can learn more about your position and where the future might lead. Leaders want to help, especially those at Paycom. Take Rachel, for example. Part of her Paycom journey includes mentoring new employees in her department.

“Being able to share what I’ve learned with client success managers, teaching them how to troubleshoot, building relationships with other departments and speaking with confidence is so rewarding,” she said.

Become familiar with your benefits

Benefits are a huge part of a company’s culture, and they go a long way in reflecting the organization’s values. One new-employee tip is to take some time to check out everything your new employer offers.

When it comes to unique benefits and perks, Paycom stands apart from the rest. We’ve got conventional paid time off and retirement offerings, but we also offer unique benefits addressing health and wellness, family support and financial literacy. Take a look at our award-winning package of benefits and compensation and see what you think!

The best way to experience the culture is to engage with it

If you want to understand the culture of your new workplace, we recommend that you dive right in! Obviously, This all depends on what your new company offers. Engagement could include volunteering to be part of an internal committee, joining an intramural sports team or becoming involved with an employee resource group (ERG).

Paycom offers 11 ERGs that participate in a variety of on- and off-campus events. As a part of our Hispanic Organization for Leadership Advancement (HOLA) ERG, Karina S. (she/her) has found a valuable community within Paycom.

“This ERG has given me a sense of purpose and belonging,” she said. “I have met many like-minded people that have helped me with personal and career development goals.”

When you start that sweet new gig, make sure you’re taking a positive step forward in your professional journey. Want to join a team where you can build a career without limits? Apply to Paycom today!
