With the first half of 2020 already in the bag, it’s time to decide which titles will make your pile of summer reading.
So we reached out to some previous guests of our HR Break Room® podcast to see what books and blogs they’d recommend for your summer reading list!
HR Break Room alums Dave Ryan, Trish McFarlane and Steve Boese offer up a broad spectrum of media that ranges from the timeless to the very timely, and we wanted to keep you in the loop. Dive in and see if you can’t find something that will help you take a break from this heat!
Book recommendation: Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap … and Others Don’t by Jim Collins
“I feel that the content Mr. Collins has to offer is still spot-on. I have worked mostly in manufacturing and the book relates so many things to manufacturing, I find it to be hugely relevant to my work.”
Blog recommendation: Fistful of Talent
“This is a multicontributor site with some well-known, smart and articulate HR folks. There is a ton of content for the here-and-now, as well as on much more esoteric HR matters. They also have a podcast called HR Famous, and it’s the kind of thing you can multitask to.”
Book recommendation: DataStory: Explain Data and Inspire Action Through Story by Nancy Duarte
“Her insights on how to explain data visually in a way that is different from what we’ve all been taught is so valuable. I picked it up in the airport last fall and have read it three or four times already. My copy is full of Post-it Flags!”
Book recommendation: Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy
“I re-read this 1963 book. It’s a little dated in spots, but it still has fantastic advice on sales, customer support, leadership, hiring and more. One of the essential business books, I think.”
Blog recommendation: Marginal Revolution
“Marginal Revolution has been really helpful as each day they post an article with 10-15 links about the economy, the pandemic, how businesses and other organizations are adapting. I find it to be a really useful resource.”
